Evaluation of Pliers’ Grip span in Both Genders
نویسندگان
چکیده
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of gender and grip span (45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75mm) on resultant force, Individual finger force and subjective discomfort rating. A total of 16 participants (8 males, 8 Females) were participated in this study. All participants were asked to exert a maximum grip force with three repetitions, and to report the subjective discomfort rating for seven grip spans of pliers. A pair of revised pliers which can change grip span from 45 to 75mm was applied to estimate resultant force and individual finger force. For the resultant force, females had about 86.3% of males (413.69N vs. 357.90N) in this maximum gripping task. The largest resultant forces were obtained at grip spans of 50~75mm for males and 60~65mm for females, respectively. In the analysis of subjective discomfort ratings, the smallest and the largest grip spans (45 and 75mm) and the largest grip span (75mm) were rated as the most discomfort grip spans for males and females, respectively. Significantly males showed the least discomfort at 60~65mm, whereas females showed the least discomfort at 60mm. Therefore, based on the current study, 60~65mm and 60mm grip spans might be considered as appropriate grip spans for males and females.

An ergonomic evaluation of manual Cleco plier designs: effects of rubber grip, spring recoil, and worksurface angle.
The present study evaluated two design modifications (rubber grip and torsion spring) to the conventional manual Cleco pliers by electromyography (EMG), hand discomfort, and design satisfaction. This study also surveyed workers' satisfaction with selected design features of the pliers for ergonomic improvement. A two-way (plier design x worksurface angle) within-subject (nested within gender an...
متن کاملHand span influences optimal grip span in male and female teenagers.
PURPOSE To determine if there is an optimal grip span for determining the maximum handgrip strength in male and female teenagers, and if the optimal grip span was related to hand span. If they are related then the second aim was to derive a mathematic equation relating hand span and optimal grip span. METHODS One hundred healthy teenage boys (15.1 +/- 1.1 y) and 106 girls (15.4 +/- 1.3 y) wer...
متن کاملHand size influences optimal grip span in women but not in men.
This study investigates which position (grip span) on the standard grip dynamometer results in maximum grip strength. Our null hypotheses included (1) no optimal grip span exists for measuring grip strength and (2) optimal grip span is unrelated to hand size. We also intended to derive a simple mathematical algorithm to adapt grip span to hand size. Seventy healthy subjects (40 women/30 men; me...
متن کاملAssessment of handgrip strength in preschool children aged 3 to 5 years.
We investigated whether there is an optimal grip span for determining the maximum handgrip strength in preschool children and if it is influenced by gender, age, or hand size. A total of 292 preschool children (3-5 years; 59.2% boys) carried out the handgrip strength test with different grip spans (4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, and 6.0 cm). The hand size was also measured. We also determined the reliabil...
متن کاملEffect of Grip Span on Lateral Pinch Grip Strength
Repetitive, high-force pinch grip exertions are common in many occupational activities. The goal of the current study was to quantify the relationship between lateral pinch grip span (distance between thumb and index finger) and lateral pinch grip strength. An experiment was conducted in which 40 participants performed maximal lateral pinch grip exertions at 11 levels of grip span distances (0,...
